Hormones are the messengers in the body that travel through the bloodstream to start, stop, speed up or slow down your physical and chemical functions and processes across all body systems. The ovaries are the source of oestrogen and progesterone, the two key hormones that control the reproductive system, including the menstrual cycle and fertility in women.
During menopause, the number of ovarian follicles declines and the ovaries become less responsive to the two other hormones involved in reproduction—Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). As ovaries age and release fewer hormones, FSH and LH can no longer perform their usual functions to regulate estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. These inevitable changes in hormones and the natural decline of oestrogen levels during menopause can significantly affect a woman’s health for years to come.
Menopause can happen in a woman’s 40s or 50s, but the average age is 51. While menopause is a natural biological process the physical symptoms, such as hot flashes, and emotional symptoms may disrupt sleep, lower energy levels, affect emotional health and compromise and age the skin. There are several reasons why menopause could be triggered, these are often associated with stress and the impact on hormones specifically oestrogen and progesterone.
In this lecture, Dr Tiina Meder will present important considerations when addressing a client who is going through menopause and some of the most effective solutions to consider for skin management. In this lecture you will learn:
